My Midsummer 2026
Thoughts from this midsummer, on living with a cat named Geshi, and a quiet prayer for Layla.
Even as I write this, there is another living being in my room, crying out desperately.
Every day, he meows so much it is almost unbearable.
The idea that cats have small, cute voices compared to dogs, or that they do not meow much, is a complete lie.
Whether something is happening or nothing is happening, Geshi is always making noise.
His name is Geshi, the Japanese word for midsummer.
He was caught by humans on midsummer day.
My friend, who rescues cats, names them after dates or events, partly because she rescues so many cats at so many different moments, and partly so that when they eventually find a home, too much feeling does not remain attached to them.
CC was caught on the day of a closing ceremony.
Arai was caught on the wedding day of my friend, formerly Ms. Arai.
On the day of a wedding, when one surname was about to disappear, a cat appeared to inherit it.
Geshi was one of them.
The reason I was contacted was because, as a freelancer who works from home as if it were a hideout, I had an environment where a cat could be properly raised.
Come to think of it, I had always loved cats.
At my grandparents’ house, where I often stayed, there were Mimi-chan and Linda-chan.
They did not come out much in front of a noisy child, but I remember that they died peacefully in my grandmother’s arms.
When I was in elementary school, every time I visited a friend who had an American Shorthair, my allergies would flare up.
Still, I could not stop touching the cat.
After I started working, a friend of mine got a cat.
When her friendly Somali sat on my lap, I felt that this weight was more lovable than anything else.
I hate taking freedom away.
I hate having it taken from me.
I believe that animals who live in nature should, as much as possible, live naturally.
To live freely according to their own senses has its cruel sides, but at least they do not have to live obediently to something.
Their lives are left to their own choices and luck.
I want to respect the freedom of life as much as I can.
Because I was that kind of person, I thought I would never have a pet in my life.
But then Geshi appeared in front of me.
If I supported him, there was a higher chance that he could live more safely, more healthily, and for longer.
Our life together began immediately, and at the same time, an endless war began in which we each tried to win our own freedom.
I fought against allergies, the securing of work time, and his noisy meowing.
Geshi fought for the acquisition of good food, escape from the cage, and the right to chew on cables.
Every day was such a war that I wondered if this was harsher than nature.
A noisy cat and an exhausted human.
No matter how much I searched the internet, no matter how many cat owners I asked, I could not find many examples of a cat that meowed all day long.
The human was almost neurotic.
Around that time, when Geshi had a blood test, the oxygen level in his blood was high, and the vet gave him the mysterious diagnosis of being “an athlete cat.”
Apparently, being loud also requires stamina.
At some point, I began to give up on acquiring my own freedom.
Then, for some reason, Geshi began to calm down a little.
Perhaps the tension in our minds had been interacting with each other, and we had both been irritated.
Even now, almost every day, we are still trying to acquire the freedom each of us needs.
Perhaps this is what it means to live with another life.
Life cannot be owned.
It only exists in the same space.
———
Around that time, a friend I often talked to about Geshi told me her own cat was ill.
Like Geshi, she was a rescued cat.
Like Geshi, she was a brown tabby.
She was female, unlike him, and an adorable cat with a small round face, a tiny chin, and beautiful large green eyes.
The fact that my friend also lived alone with a cat was something we had in common, and I felt that we understood the existence of cats in a similar form.
Anyone who lives with an animal has probably, at least once, carried that animal to the hospital while tearing up at their own inadequacy.
Why wasn’t I more careful then?
Why did this have to happen?
That kind of regret does not disappear.
If we could take their place, we would.
My friend’s cat passed away, and all I could send was a message.
It did not come true, but actually, I prayed with Geshi.
Please let her get better.
I told Geshi to wish for it too, but it did not reach her.
Today is midsummer.
It is also the day that gave Geshi his name.
In the quiet night before the longest day of the year begins, I want to offer one more prayer.
May Layla still be happy now.
May Geshi’s noisy voice reach her too.
